So I haven't done much recently, I know. Been busy with schoolwork and the like. That said, an idea for a Superman video game hit me recently, and I think it's a bit of a doozy.
Those who dislike the new Action Comics may have their valid points (I like it personally), but there is one thing that it must be agreed that it is good for: it is absolutely fantastic at setting up game opportunities. Here's everything I've thought of for it so far (control scheme based on PS3, but it would of course be cross-platform).
Superman: The Game
Initial powerset: Super-strength, super-speed, super-durability, great leaping powers, super-hearing.
End powerset: Super-Strength (upgraded), Super-Speed (upgraded), Super-Durability (Upgraded), Leaping (upgraded), flight (ability to use variations on all other powers in-flight, though the player CAN be knocked out of the air by strong enough blasts, though tapping X mid-fall can restart flight), heat-vision, x-ray vision, arctic breath, super-breath, telescopic vision, super-hearing.
X Button: Jump. Hold for higher jumps, tap mid-air to begin flight (unlockable), tap again to land.
Square Button: Melee attacks, throw (while holding an object), punch (while holding an enemy), hold for stronger attacks, Weapon power (when aiming).
Circle Button: Grab, put-down, grapple
Triangle Button: Talk, interact.
R1 Button: Aim Weapon power (over-the-shoulder).
R2 Button: Super-speed.
L1 Button: Use Senses power.
L2 Button: Guard.
Cross-panel: Select Weapon and Vision powers.
Left stick: Move character (Click, hold, and move right stick to zoom).
Right Stick: Camera.
Unlockable costumes: Super-jeans (Start of game), Super-Armor (Acquired mid-story), Classic Outfit (Complete all races), Superboy (Find all Data), MoS outfit (complete all side-quests), Clark Kent (no penalty, requires completion of all Investigations).
Game-Style: Sandbox Free-Roam with missions around Metropolis, as well as random "savings" (car crashes, burning buildings, suicides, crime, etc.). Some missions utilize Kent-mode. All powers available, but use of any overt abilities within sight of onlookers (anything but vision powers) causes failure of the mission (which may be retried). While in Kent-mode, character is dressed as Clark Kent. Kent-mode is based on stealth and investigation, allowing players to hone their skills.
Plot: Divided into Acts (ala inFAMOUS), the story begins with Clark Kent coming to Metropolis for an interview at the Daily Planet. A 'tutorial' is given when Clark hears a mugger dragging off a woman. He uses his abilities to track down the mugger and save the woman, then arrives late at the planet. We meet Lois Lane, see Jimmy Olsen, and Clark is personally turned down for a job by Perry White. The rest of the story loosely follows Action Comics, deals with an invasion by Brainiac, and ends with his defeat by Clark (who has fully become Superman by that point).
While what I've said is I believe solid gameplay, the focus (to truly make it stand out) would have to be the story. MAKE people care about Clark, and the rest of the characters. The important thing to remember is that he is Superman. Everyone knows he's going to win, so physical struggle isn't the issue (that's saved for gameplay). The conflict here has to be a matter of psychology, and the setup for any sequels has to be a matter of necessary character growth rather than last-minute "DUN-dun-DUUUUN!" moments. While Superman will definitely save the day in the end, Clark's life should still have some very noticeable problems in the end, which have to be addressed later (unrequited Lois love, still stuck in a crappy job, etc.).
